Bangladesh saw the light of Rotary with the formation of Rotary Club of Dhaka on 22nd December 1937 being sponsored by Rotary Club of Calcutta. Later on, in the erstwhile East Pakistan, six Rotary Clubs were organized namely Chittagong (1952), Narayanganj (1953), Khulna (1957), Mymensing (1957), Dhaka North (1967), Comilla (1968), and Chandpur (1970). After our independence in 1971, Rotary Club of Chandpur received Charter as the first Rotary Club in Bangladesh, on 12 April 1974.

Since 1991-92, there were significant growth both in Number of Clubs and in Membership in RID 3280 and by the year 2010-11, the Club number went up to almost 170 and the Membership was about 5000. Rotary International then directed our District to initiate bifurcation of our mega District.
A committee of Past RI Officers comprising of PDG’s Iftekharul Alam, Habibullah Khan, L k Sidiqi and M A Awwal submitted the first proposal for bifurcation of RID-3280. This was followed up by DG (2011-12), Dr Monzurul Hoque Chowdhury, in real earnest. Among the many proposals, the Committee chose the major rivers Jamuna & part of Padma as the bifurcation line, to divide the
District-3280. The Council reached to a consensus that basically, the Clubs on the South of these rivers shall constitute RID 3282. Finally the bifurcation proposal of District 3280 into 3281 & 3282 was approved by the RI Board Meeting, held in May 2011. Board also approved our proposal of allowing this bifurcation to come into effect from July 01, 2013. Rtn. Cdre M M Rahman, psc,
MPHF, MD, is the Charter District Governor and Rtn. CP Abu Azmal Pathan, PHF, MC, is the Charter District Sectary of the New RI District-3282, Bangladesh.
Today, while the bifurcation has come into effect, and we are starting our journey as two new Districts emerging from the long existing District of 3280, we have around 124 clubs having about 3800 Members in the District 3281 and 80 Clubs having around 2400 Members in the District 3282.
History will speak how far we will go during the years to come fulfilling Rotary’s demand of extension and expansion. Let us look forward to see Rotary’s continued growth to meet up the great need of volunteers like Rotarians and organizations like Rotary Clubs to serve for the cause of making this world a better place to live.
